On a recent rummage through the remnant receptacle at Laura Ashley I fell upon this ravishing piece of oilcloth at a reduced price of £8.40. Roughly 1.2m x 1.2m square it is the perfect size to use as a protective cover on my breakfast bar and this morning I put it into action as I set about making some ‘cheesy feet’ for today’s Father’s Day celebration.
For the benefit of those of you who do know not what I’m talking about please see the recipe below:
CHEESY FEET RECIPE
150g cheddar cheese, 100g plain flour, black pepper, 100g cubed butter, 1 egg yolk, 1 level tsp mustard.
Heat oven to 220C, 425F, Gas 7. Grease a baking sheet and cover with baking parchment. Grate the cheese into a mixing bowl, sift the flour, add the black pepper and mix together. Add the butter and rub into the mixture until fine ‘breadcrumbs’, then stir in the egg yolk and the mustard. (NB I always make the ‘breadcrumbs’ in the sink as I find it is a better height for me than the worktop).
Roll the pastry into a square, 5mm thick, then cut out the ‘cheesy feet’.
Place on the baking sheet and bake for 8-10 mins, until pale golden brown. Sesame seeds, poppy seeds, parmesan cheese, or whatever takes your fancy, can be added. Recipe makes approximately 16 feet.
The resulting cheese tasting biscuits are ideal as a children’s party snack or equally suitable for the grown-ups with a glass of wine!
Without doubt these were a winner with the whole family!
