Authentic Sardinian Style

I have just returned from an amazing stay in the Sardinian mountains.  Hotel Su Gologone is situated a short drive from Oliena in the country’s interior.  Described as an “experience hotel” and “country resort” it did not disappoint.  Its authentic Sardinia style was evident in its unpretentious comfort in this truly peaceful and tranquil environment.

Our suite was nestled in the hillside enclosed in its own lavender and rose oasis. In the garden, seating strewn with jewel coloured cushions, benefitted from dappled shade provided by the native olive and fig trees. Hidden away to one side of the building was an equally colourful hammock and hand painted bean bag;  ideal for a late afternoon siesta!

Inside, our suite was equally as laid back. Comprising a separate living room and bedroom, each with its own shower room, plus outside tub!

The shower rooms were bright and airy with whitewashed walls, floors and ceilings. The uber-modern sanitaryware was juxtaposed with painted tree trunks which were used for seating and storage.  Rustic wooden ladders were laden with ultra-soft towels and robes.

Whilst these rooms were quite stark, by contrast,  the living room and bedroom benefitted from colourful, locally made crafts.  Heavy natural linen cushions and tie-backs were decorated with looped woollen flowers in contrasting shades of pink whilst the tea making facilities added a welcome pop of colour with their pretty pink linen cloth and brightly coloured china. The painted furniture and the richly patterned rugs added a feeling of warmth.

Paintings and framed woven shawls adorned the walls whilst wrought iron curtain poles, decorated with hand crafted birds, added to the homely feel.  The huge bed and soft pillows weren’t just for show either as they were incredibly comfortable.

Wandering around the grounds of the hotel we discovered a host of Sardinian delights; a kitchen garden, a terrace of dreams, a bakery and tea room, and a number of gift shops as well as a bar set in the side of the mountain.  The views were breathtaking and anybody who loves the shabby chic revolution would adore the genuinely old buildings that add to the charm and tranquility of this resort.

The local colour palette ranged from the patina of faded woodwork and brickwork through to the vivid shades of the summer flowers and vibrant colours of the drapes, cushions and hand painted accessories.

Unfortunately, I did not bring back any of the wonderful crafts that were made by the local artisans just an immense feeling of wellbeing from staying in this lovely environment.  It also reinforced my belief that comfort is an essential element of good interior design and should not be substituted  for fashion!
