Feeling Mildly Patriotic….

In a year that enjoyed a royal wedding and a relatively successful appearance at the football World Cup, I have found myself feeling mildly patriotic, perhaps, dare I say, even proud to be British!
The shops have been full of red white and blue; motorists have adorned their cars with England flags; and raucous voices on the radio have claimed in no uncertain terms “its coming home”!
So, with this as the soundtrack to the Summer of 2018, I couldn’t help but let it influence my design for this pine shelf unit.
With a stock of red, white, and blue Annie Sloan chalk paints™ to the ready I set about converting this rather conventional pine shelf to a piece of statement furniture.
I have to say that the preparation was the most time consuming part as I applied different widths of clean edge masking tape to create the pattern.

Once the red and blue were applied, and completely dry, I set about masking these so that I could apply the white.
By now it had taken on the persona of a British Airways aircraft, more specifically Concorde’s tail-fin livery!
The next step was to paint the support brackets and to finish with a soft wax to protect the colourful surface.
On this occasion I chose to use a soft white wax to tone down the colours. The end result was that of a washed out denim appearance not dissimilar to that of a Bruce Springsteen album cover.
The final step was to add some of my hand crafted accessories to provide a truly patriotic scheme.
